Neuro Muscular Solutions

Improve comfort, function and stability! A well designed, fitted and manufactured orthoses can help those with neuromuscular disorders to regain and maintain function and avoid deformity and pressure sores.

Support optimal function

Many people living with neuromuscular conditions experience muscle imbalance through a combination of muscle weakness or overactivity that can affect their walking, balance and other functional activities. This can lead to fixed muscle shortening and joint deformities.  Well designed, fitted and manufactured orthoses can help to regain and maintain function, avoid deformity and reduce the likelihood of pressure injuries.

Reduce falls and injury

Some people present with conditions that make them susceptible to falls through either collapsing of joints due to weakness, tripping over toes, or through a loss of standing balance and muscular control. Orthoses can help to support joints and hold them in positions which prevent falls or trips, enabling a smoother, more controlled walking pattern

Post-Polio Syndrome or a spinal cord injury can weaken the muscle in the lower limb, resulting in uncontrolled bending of the knee, causing falls and possibly subsequent injury. A Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO) can be fitted to stabilise the leg and better control the knee.

  • Regain functionality lost through muscle weakness

  • Prevent muscle shortening and joint deformity

  • Protect against calluses and pressure sores

Protect from foot deformity

Conditions like Spina-Bifida and Cerebral Palsy can cause foot deformity.  In areas of the body with many bones, like the foot, deformity can cause calluses and areas of localised pressure.  An AFO designed to the contour of the foot will allow for pressure redistribution and protect the foot from damage.

Support for a wide range of conditions

These are just some examples.  Orthoses can be of assistance in the management of many neuro-muscular conditions including

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Stroke
  • Polio
  • Charcot Marie Tooth
  • Brain and/or Spinal Cord Injury
  • Spina Bifida
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Motor Neuron Disease
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome
